Hi, you guys! How was your week? I at last got the box I was waiting for and it is - Birchbox. For those of you know what it is, skip over to the photos. For those who don't, read on.
Birchbox is a beauty sample subscription service. For a subscription of $10 a month, you get a box of 4 or 5 deluxe samples from various semi luxury brands. It is similar to other boxes like MyGlam, Beauty Army and the recent mega flop called Glossybox (they charged their customers triple or 4 times on their credit cards and cancelled the remaining orders. They are still sorting it out.) You can buy these full size products on birchbox.com
Anyway, lets look at my Birchbox. First regarding shipping, it took about 10 days to get delivered since I'm in the west coast. And I had some local post office issues that delayed it a further 3 days. Little disappointing.
The box -
Its a cardboard box. Its small, I could store pencils in it. Every other blog I see, raves about the box. No raving here. Its a cardboard box. It does what it should do.
The theme of this box was travel. So I was supposed to get 4 or 5 travel sized samples or travel- friendly products. This was described in the intro card on top.
Opening the box - I got the following products -
Ada Cosmetics bronzer in peach sample
Stainiac lip and cheek stain sample
Borghese cream cleansing bar sample
Bvlgari Omnia perfume sample
Cynthia Rowley designed band-aids - full size
Read on for reviews of each product -
Ada Cosmetics bronzer in peach -
It is indeed very peachy and doesn't stand out much against my natural skin colour. There is some shimmer to it too. I'm not sure I can use it as a bronzer. I guess I can use it as an eye-shadow. It does look good on my eyes. Full size product is $12.45
Borghese soap -
The soap is good. Non-drying. Full size product is $16.50, so I don't think I will be investing in that.
Stainaic Lip and Cheek stain -
I was more excited about this product than the others. I have been wanting to try it out for quite some time. Thats the swatch. Its pretty sheer. As they say, it gives a long lasting hint of colour to your lips and cheeks. For the cheeks, I had to put in 4-5 coats to get any colour beyond my natural colour. But it looks very good on my lips. My lips look like they are naturally deep pink and it lasts about 5-6 hours. Not all day as promised. The downside though is that, it was so so so dry. The reviews in most websites say its non-drying but I found it very drying. It would be a great idea ot put a lip balm over this. Full sized product is $17
BVLGARI Omnia Crystalline sample -
It was a very small sample, the kind that you get in Sephora for free, if you buy something. But I really like the perfume. Like really really like it. Like I-am-buying-the-full-size kind of like it It is described as fruity floral with notes of bergamot, citrus accord, neroli, bamboo, nashi pear, lily of the valley, lotus flower, peony, balsa wood, sandalwood, amber.
Thats a lot but its amazing. And it lasts really long. About 6 hrs but it doesn't fade into nothingness at the end of 6 hrs. You just need to top it a bit. Bad sample size - good perfume.
Lastly, Cynthia Rowley designed band-aids -
They are sequinned and printed fun type of band-aids. They are full size, not sample size. Cute and useful at the same time. And the first time in my life where I get to wear a designer band-aid. Retail Value - $5
So whats my take on this?
It was fun but I'm not blown away. I will wait 2 more months to decide on whether I'm gonna keep it or cancel the subscription.
Is it worth the ten dollars? I got my $10 worth products but the usefulness is questionable. I could have easily gotten a drugstore mascara or lipstick for $10 which would have been a lot more useful.
Also different people get different boxes. Its not the same products for everyone. So there is always this annoyance of, she got a better box than me.
Then why subscribe? I like the idea of a surprise box every month. Its a "monthly gift- giving service" for which I pay $10. Lame but also kind of fun.
If you want to discover new products and are pressed for time like me, then this is the best option.
If you would like to subscribe, you can do so here. If you join through my link, you give me 50 points for introducing you to BirchBox. I would consider it exceedingly nice of you if you do so. Thanks :)
There is also a Men's Birchbox which you can join in their website.
Do you like this idea of subscription services? Have you tried any? What was your opinion about them?
Thanks for reading,
